The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission has today (11 September 2009) welcomed a visit from members of Bangor’s Kilcooley Women’s Centre. The group attended an information and training workshop on human rights at its offices in Belfast.

Alison Blayney, Manager of Kilcooley Women’s Centre commented:

Today was a wonderful opportunity for women involved in community development in the North Down area to learn how the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission operates and how it can improve the lives of our communities.  Raising awareness of human rights is crucial to ensure women are encouraged to adopt a rights based approach in grass roots community development work”.

NIHRC Chief Commissioner, Professor Monica McWilliams stated:

I was very pleased to welcome Kilcooley Women’s Centre to the Commission today. As part of the Commission’s work the group was provided training on human rights so that they too can be part of our education role in the protection and promotion of rights. Today’s visit also gave the Commission a valuable opportunity to hear more about the work in Kilcooley and the challenges facing women who use the Centre’s services.”

The crèche is a bright and spacious environment and has been very beneficial for children starting playgroup or nursery, as they have had experience of a structured childcare environment.
