Essential Skills Literacy
What will I learn?
This qualification aims to improve your ability to; speak, listen and engage in discussion in a range of contexts. Read, understand and compare different pieces of writing to gather information, ideas, arguments and opinions. Write to communicate information, ideas and opinions effectively and persuasively.
This course is generally classroom based and will be delivered over a full academic year (Sept – May/June). Passing the relevant assessments will result in either a Level 1 or Level 2 qualification.
This course generally has two components; Speaking and Listening and Reading and Writing. You must pass all the components to be awarded the qualification. Assessment is usually in the form of a controlled assessment and one external examination. The controlled assessment takes place during the year and will assess your speaking and listening. Your examination will be held in May/June and will assess you reading and writing. Attendance will be monitored and can be used as part of the assessment process.
This course is perfect for you if you want to develop further skills in literacy, progress in education, training and/or employment and for if you wish to improve your personal development and life skills.
Your tutor is a highly experienced tutor and assessor who has experience delivering training for a number of education providers and for various organisations in the third/voluntary sector, public sector and private sector. They have worked closely with the main awarding bodies within the UK and through their experience of marking GCSE papers has gained an extensive understanding of the English specification and curriculum.

There are no subject entry requirements to this course. Your tutor will perform an initial assessment to ensure you are working towards the appropriate level. Open to all residents of Ards and North Down.
