What will I learn?

This course will help develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to help you communicate confidently and effectively with others. You will learn how to express yourself creatively in your writing and speaking. You will develop your own writing ability through reading different types of texts. You will use speech and writing in a variety of ways depending on different situations and audiences.

Unit 1: Writing for Purpose and Audience and Reading to Access Non-fiction and Media Texts
Section A: Writing
Section B: Reading

Students will learn how to:

  • write accurately and effectively
  • select vocabulary to persuade and/or inform the reader
  • use accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • explain how writers use different methods to influence the reader

 

Unit 2: Speaking and Listening
Task 1: Individual Presentation
Task 2: Discussion
Task 3: Role Play

Students will learn how to:

  • communicate clearly and effectively
  • present information and ideas
  • express ideas clearly, accurately and appropriately
  • interact with others through discussion
  • create and sustain different roles from a range of real-life contexts
  • experiment with language to engage with the audience

 

Unit 3: Studying Spoken and Written Language
Task 1: The Study of Spoken Language
Task 2: The Study of Written Language

Students will learn how to:

  • understand how language varies in different contexts
  • read and understand texts
  • evaluate how texts may be interpreted differently depending on the reader’s perspective

 

Unit 4: Personal or Creative Writing and Reading Literary and Non-fiction Texts
Section A: Personal or Creative Writing
Section B: Reading literary and Non-fiction Texts

Students will learn how to:

  • write clearly and fluently
  • use an appropriate writing form depending on the context
  • use a range of sentence structures for effect

Students will complete 2 written exams that are each 1 hour and 45 minutes long and marked externally by CCEA as well as 2 controlled assessments marked by the tutor. Students will receive a certificate on completion.

This course is for everyone who requires a pass grade at GCSE English for their job, for anyone who has sat the exam before and would like to improve on their grade or for anyone who would like to study English at a more advanced level than they have previously. Students do not need to have reached a particular level of attainment before beginning to study this course.

Don McEvoy

Your tutor is a highly experienced tutor and assessor who has experience delivering training for a number of education providers and for various organisations in the third/voluntary sector, public sector and private sector. They have worked closely with the main awarding bodies within the UK and through their experience of marking GCSE papers has gained an extensive understanding of the English specification and curriculum.
