Level 3 Classroom Assistant
CLASSROOM ASSISTANT (2018-2019) COURSE INFORMATION
Candidates must have Level 2 or GCSE English or Maths (c and above) and have a 6 hour per week placement in a school setting. Candidates will also be required to purchase the course text book.
This course is a full course of study from Sepember 2019 to summer 2020. It is awarded on successful completion of a portfolio of evidence, which passes the Assessor marking scheme, the Internal Quality Assessor checks and finally the External Verifier who attends the centre from the awarding body. The course content will include:
- Evidence of your volunteer role/placement in a school for at least 6 hours per week. You will be required to keep a record of your attendance.
- Six Modules of study to complete based on:
- Communication Skills
- Supporting Learning Practical
- Element (observed by your tutor/Assessor)
The portfolio is a substantial piece of work which requires a LOT of study time at home and dedication to compile. However, with the required amount of study, it is not difficult and is achievable by those who put the required effort in. Deadlines for submission of written work need to be met, due to deadlines the tutor and the centre also have for the awarding body.
The course is supported by a number of books and a course book that the student will be required to purchase. Whilst this course will make you eligible to apply to Classroom Assistant vacancies, there is no guarantee a job offer will be on offer on completion. Your portfolio and work placement will help you provide the evidence and references needed to be considered.
This very worthwhile course will explain many of the teaching theories and help you put them into practice. A level of literacy and numeracy is required in order the student can complete the assignments and home study to the required standard. Some other course providers allow students to study maths and english along side the Classroom Assistant. KWC does not, for a good reason. Most of our students have family responsiblities, are returning to education after some time. To take on 5 hours English & Maths, and the home study required to gain the qualification in a year, then study 3 hours for classroom assistant, with the studying at home required (see below), add to that a 6 hour weekly placement in a school can be too much and dropping out of everything is potentially going to put the student off studying for a lifetime.
The course will be taught in a supportive and student centred environment with some 1-1 student support available if required.
All applicants to the course will be required to complete a short induction to the course with the tutor to ensure they are aware of the committment required. This course is usually over-subscribed and places will only be confimred following an interview to determine the student indends to use the qualification in their future career.
